ABORTION RIGHTS IN LATIN AMERICA
PILAR GOLDMANN and ANGELES ANCHOU

With the exception of Uruguay, Cuba and the City of Mexico, abortion is a serious crime equivalent in some countries (El Salvador) to a homicide. This year the strongest campaign to legalise abortion took place in Argentina, with the message “sexual education, choice of contraception to avoid abortion, safe abortion to preserve our lives”. In spite of grassroots campaigns and professionals discussing the benefit of legalising abortion and in spite of the lower chamber approving the bill the higher chamber stopped the process. In spite of being illegal, higher and middle classes can afford expensive abortions performed by professionals in secret clinics. The poor had to put up with risky DIY procedures. This is a class issue in all Latin America. The energy of the Argentinian campaign produced a domino effect in most of the other countries of Latin America. The green handkerchief is now the symbol of our battle to own our body.
Latin American activists share the story

STOP THE STRIP!
SASHA RAKOFF

Page 3, Strip Clubs, Porn. We’re Not Buying It! Set up 3 years ago Not Buying It challenges the porn and sex trade and their normalising. We have successfully petitioned Ann Summers to dump its link with Pornhub and have the Equality and Human Rights Commission investigating why advertising regulator, the ASA, still allows porn and sex ads in newspapers.

Most significantly, Not Buying It spearheaded a successful legal challenge against one Council showing how the licensing of strip clubs is in breach of equality law. This has ramifications for the industry and Councils UK wide. We are now working with groups and individuals across the country, with the Women’s Equality party having just passed a motion to take on this branch of the sex industry.
