Asha Hans is the former Professor of Political Science and Gender Studies at Utkal University India. Has taught and carried out research at various Universities including Columbia and American University (USA), Oxford (UK) and York (Canada). Co-founder of SMRC a DPO in India has worked on issues of gender and disability at national and international level with UN and its various agencies since 1990. Has authored books and articles on disability. Her first book was Gender Disability and Identity (Sage 2003) and the second Gender Disability and Trajectories of Power (Sage, 2015) Participated in most of the path breaking disability legislation drafting at the UN and in India including disability and migration, disability and disasters risk reduction.
Since 1999 initiated policy and programmes on inclusion of disability in emergencies in India and various parts of the world. Has worked with Handicap International and Rehabilitation International on creating change in emergencies through inclusion. Has been consultant and advisor to Sphere Humanitarian Charter for inclusion and consultant to World Bank (GPDD) and UNDP on disaster and disability issues.
