Dorothea Smartt is a respected poet, live artist and literary activist. As a member of Brixton Black Women’s Group, she contributed to Blackfeminist activism in the 1980’s and 90’s. She is author of two poetry collections, Connecting Medium and Ship Shape, [Peepal Tree Press], and features in several anthologies, journals and the online Poetry Archive. Her recent pamphlet Reader I Married Him: And Other Queer Goings On, is described as “subversive, radical, and surprisingly panoramic. Ultimately…about Black diasporic love.” She’s working on a new collection, re-visioning standard narratives by imagining same-sex relationships among ‘West Indian’ émigré workers on the Panama Canal.
