The Domestic Abuse Bill

FiLiA believes it’s essential that the Bill moves forward in this parliament and is pleased to hear it mentioned in the Queens Speech, we have waited too long. But we need to ensure that the Bill is fit for purpose. The bill should ensure that we:

·        Build Sisterhood & Solidarity with our Migrant sisters escaping violence and ensure they are offered the same level of protection whatever their immigration status. This cannot continue to be a barrier to accessing often life saving help and support.  We need to rebuild the network of ‘by and for’ women’s organisations for black and minoritized women who have seen their sector decimated in recent years. Women only service provision must be protected.

·        Defend Women’s Human rights The hostile environment has become a clear barrier to women accessing safety, we need to see that women’s rights are not secondary and the ratification of the Istanbul convention would send a clear signal that they are being prioritised. The family courts are not fit for purpose and need urgent reform.

·        Amplify the Voices of Women  Including all those that have experienced any form of male violence, the recent rape review shows there is much work to do to support women trying to access justice. We must hear from women what works for them and take a believing approach to investigating crimes of male violence.

We believe the new Independent Domestic Abuse Commissioner will play an important role in holding the state to account and driving forward positive change. We need to work together to ensure that violence against women is no longer tolerated and perpetrators are held to account for their behaviour.

We need clear reassurance from the Government that these measures will be part of the bill going forward so that all women are protected by it.
